the greatest showman

I’ll never pass up an opportunity for musical theatre, and The Greatest Showman did not disappoint! (And yes, I currently have the album on repeat, belting it out in my car every moment I get). This film is a colorful, energized reminder to follow our dreams. Dreams that may seem impossible, but can come true if you believe in yourself and keep working at them, regardless of what gets in the way.

This means you might have to take some risks. Fear is the hardest obstacle to overcome, including fear of failure, fear of judgement or even fear of success to name a few. Each character in the movie faces a fear and takes a risk:

  • P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) came from poverty and risked everything to create a show that had never been done before. It made him rich!
  • Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron) gave up his comfortable, yet boring life as a playwright to join the circus with no guarantee of success. It made him happy!
  • The circus performers put themselves out there, despite judgement and ridicule. It made them self-confident!

These are risks people take all the time in real life. I faced a fear of judgement to post this blog! It was a risk to put myself out there, but I realized I have nothing to lose if I do. Only time will tell where it takes me, but right now I'm learning so much more than if I didn't try. So, if you have a dream that you whole-heartedly believe in, face the fear, take the risk and go for it. You’ll learn, you’ll grow and you’ll never wonder “what if…”.

That’s curtains for me! Until next time, consider these questions to help you take your own flying trapeze leap:

What’s holding you back from achieving your dream?
What risk do you have to take to get closer to your dream?
What fear are you facing?
What will you lose if you don’t face it?

What will you gain if you do?
